For all but three of the thirty seven years India has been independent, a Nehru has held power. Jawaharlal Nehru was prime minister from its birth in 1947 to his death 1964. His daughter ruled the country for a further seventeen years. During that time her younger favourite son Sanjay was groomed for the accession. After his death her elder son Rajiv was brought into the political arena. Now Rajiv is in power and Indian TV commentators have already begun to shine the spotlight on young Rahul, his son, as the fourth generation.
